Accessing BInet

Anyone with a UI netid can log on to BInet. That includes visitors from UIC and UIS. Individual guest accounts can be created for visitors of the Beckman Institute who do not have a NetID. Contact the ITS Help Desk for account creation.

Multiple guest accounts can also be created for attendees of events at the Beckman Institute. Contact Space Reservations for account creation.

For any given user ID, access is available from only one computer at a time. If you log in from a second computer, the first computer's access will be terminated for security reasons.

Connecting to BInet

To connect to BInet, associate your wireless network connection to the SSID "BInet". Open any web page. The webpage will be redirected to the BInet login page. Log in using either your NetID or assigned guest account and password. Once authenticated, a new web page will open welcoming you to BInet. Leave this window open to automatically renew and maintain your connection. Closing this BInet web page will cause your login authentication to time out after 1 hour requiring you to re-login.

NOTE: Please modify your browser preferences to allow pop-ups from binetconnect.beckman.uiuc.edu, otherwise you will run into timeout problems. For more information on configuring popup blocker settings for Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari, please see these instructions.

Network Accessibility

For security reasons, BInet network access is restricted to common services which do not distribute passwords in unencrypted form. To access services not available through basic BInet, you will need to use VPN. This will secure network transmissions and allow complete network access. For more information about VPN, go to the VPN section in the Networking page.

Basic BInet Services include:

  • All standard web pages (ex. http:// web pages) (port 80)
  • All secure web pages (ex. https:// web pages) (port 443)
  • Certain Instant Messaging clients (for example, AIM and MSN Messenger)
  • Secure protocols such as SSH (port 22), SFTP (port 115), and secure POP/IMAP. (995 - pop3s) (993 - imaps)
  • All VPN secure traffic including PPTP

Research Devices

Devices necessary for research that are unable to authenticate to BInet or run VPN can be accommodated on an individual basis. Please contact ITS for more information.
